Venous Leg Ulceration Treatment

Venous Leg Ulcer Treatment in Lakewood, TX

Venous leg ulcers are chronic, slow-healing wounds that typically develop on the lower legs or ankles due to poor blood circulation. At Lakewood Foot and Ankle Specialist, we provide advanced diagnosis and treatment for venous leg ulceration, helping patients in Lakewood, TX and surrounding areas heal properly and avoid serious complications.

What Is Venous Leg Ulceration?

Venous leg ulceration occurs when the veins in the legs fail to return blood efficiently back to the heart. This condition, often caused by chronic venous insufficiency, leads to increased pressure in the veins, fluid leakage into surrounding tissue, and eventually skin breakdown and open sores.

These ulcers most commonly appear on the inner ankle or lower leg and can persist for weeks or even months without proper medical care.

Common Causes of Venous Leg Ulcers

  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Varicose veins
  • Previous blood clots (deep vein thrombosis)
  • Leg swelling and fluid retention
  • Prolonged standing or sitting
  • Obesity
  • Previous leg injuries or trauma

Symptoms of Venous Leg Ulceration

Venous leg ulcers often develop gradually and may be accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • Open sores on the lower leg or ankle
  • Swelling in the legs or ankles
  • Skin discoloration (brown or purple staining)
  • Thickened or hardened skin around the ulcer
  • Weeping or drainage from the wound
  • Aching, heaviness, or discomfort in the legs

Why Prompt Treatment Is Critical

Without proper treatment, venous leg ulcers can worsen, become infected, and significantly impact your mobility and quality of life. Chronic wounds also increase the risk of:

  • Severe infections
  • Permanent skin damage
  • Recurring ulcers
  • Delayed healing due to poor circulation

Early evaluation by a foot and ankle specialist is key to preventing long-term complications.

  • Have limited mobility
  • Have previously had leg ulcers

Dr. Burge is a caring, knowledgeable and friendly doctor. He has helped me and my wife with excellent foot care. He helped my wife treat and cure ingrown toenails. He helped us both fight toe nail fungus.

Excellent Doctors. compassionate caring and compenate. Would recommend their services to everyone.
Excellent staff with superior knowledge. They truly care about your well-being and identify the long-term solution over the quick fix. They’ve been essential to my marathon preparation and recovery.
Wish I would have seen him sooner. He took care of my plantar fsciitis! Thank you Lakewood Foot!
After an orthopedic doctor told me there was no treatment for the fibroma on my foot, I consulted with Dr. Burge who prescribed an ointment that softened the scar tissue. Along with the walking and Pilates exercise that I do routinely, I consider my foot healed! It is much more limber! Thank you so much!
I love Dr. McClurkin and Dr. Burge! Everyone is so helpful and they really know what they're doing. I will definitely see them again!
I have plantar fasciitis in both feet and suffered with pain on and off for many years. After trying another round of steroids with little improvement (this time the left foot was the culprit of my pain), Dr. Burge suggested I try their Lunula Laser. I must say I was skeptical at something for which I didn't see or feel anything during treatment. After completing the 6th round I realized I was not feeling the stabbing pain in my heel, that I had used my water socks and been at the pool with no pain afterwards, and I had worn my dressy sandals all weekend long and not complained of pain in my left foot at all! Now, that was a huge success for me! My right foot is acting up a bit now. I know what to do this time. No more steroids! It will be Lunula Laser for me!
Thank you for your excellent care. 🙏🏾💜
Dr Burge does a fantastic job especially with wound care and the office staff are super nice!

Dr.Burge and his team are amazing!! I came in with an issue with my toe and he gave me a quick and simple solution. Dr. Burge's bedside manner is incredible, he is patient and takes the time to thoroughly explain his findings. I'd highly recommend him to anyone!
Dr. Burge has an exceptional bedside manner and is an excellent surgeon!
I was referred from a friend who had dr Burge help with his diabetic foot ulcer. My son came in for an ingrown toenail and we could not have been happier with the experience. The staff was fantastic, super friendly and very helpful. Dr burge is a younger guy related well to my teenage son and was very clear in his explanation of what was going on and how the procedure would progress.
We would highly recommend him and his office as a great place to go.
UNFORTUNATELY broke my toe multiple times in the same year. FORTUNATELY I found Dr Burge. One of the kindest doctors I've ever met and such an efficient office. I never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes to be seen. I think my toe kept breaking because it liked him that much!
I can’t say enough about dr burge. His bedside manner is something I crave in every interaction I have. My foot could scare a grown man, and he made me feel like I could be a foot model. His attention to detail and gentle touch will never be forgotten.
Dr. Burge treated my ankle pain and it has not returned.
The front office staff was very friendly. Lulu gave great advice when making the appointment, which put me at ease. Dr Burge is very professional and kind. I will definitely return to this office.
I can’t say enough good things about this office! Not an appointment you want to have to make, but they make the experience so much better! Professional, friendly, knowledgeable and they truly care about you.
Absolutely an amazing doctor and staff! Top Doc!
Great experience from the moment I walked into this clinic, Lulu greeted me and was really patient about answering all my questions.
Lulu was so kind and the place was fast and efficient!
The wait time is quick and staff is kind

Venous Leg Ulcer FAQs

What is a venous leg ulcer?

A venous leg ulcer is a chronic wound—usually on the lower leg or ankle—caused by poor blood flow in the veins (venous insufficiency). Increased vein pressure can damage skin and lead to slow-healing sores.

How do I know if my wound is a venous ulcer?

Venous ulcers commonly occur near the inner ankle or lower leg and may be associated with swelling, skin discoloration, drainage, and a sore that persists for weeks. An exam is the best way to confirm the cause and rule out other issues.

Do venous leg ulcers heal on their own?

Some may improve temporarily, but many venous leg ulcers do not fully heal without treatment. Proper wound care plus compression therapy and circulation management can significantly improve healing and reduce recurrence.

What treatments help venous leg ulcers heal?

Treatment often includes advanced wound care, appropriate dressings, debridement when needed, swelling control, and compression therapy to improve venous circulation. Your plan should be tailored to the wound and your overall health.

How can I prevent venous leg ulcers from coming back?

Prevention often includes ongoing compression as recommended, managing leg swelling, protecting the skin, staying active as advised, and following a long-term circulation plan. Follow-up care helps reduce recurrence.
